Restaurant Review: Midland Brew House, Saddle Brook

midland brew house

At Midland Brewing Company, we honor the legacy of these women and men, through fine brews made with ingenuity and plenty of elbow grease. Our brewery is located near the original site of the famous Red Keg lumber camp, where we are proud to produce our line of great craft beers, including our core, seasonal and specialty brews. The Midland Brew House also features Cedar River Farms, all natural, grass fed, free range prime steaks in a variety of cuts and sizes for you to enjoy. After debating what to order from the large selection of beer, including craft beers and a nice choice of beer on tap, we felt compelled to order classic bar grub for starters.

BEER

With over 100 drafts on tap, every visit to our house is a chance to experience something new, or enjoy your favorite. The material on this site may not be reproduced, distributed, transmitted, cached or otherwise used, except with the prior written permission of Advance Local. Chunks of rich brioche are dipped into a creme brulee batter, rolled in nuts and crushed cornflakes, and fried until golden. They are served with cups of strawberry, caramel and chocolate sauces for dipping.

Midland Brew House has a wide range of wings – buffalo (mild, hot or 911), chipotle barbecue, teriyaki, guava Thai chili and maple bourbon, but I opted for coal-fired wings. Served in a cast iron skillet pulled from the coal-fired oven, their smoky flavor was pushed over the top with lemon garlic butter, fresh herbs and a cloak of caramelized onions that evokes French onion soup. The chef starts with a special burger blend, then layers on bacon, pub cheese, a spicy chipotle barbecue sauce, and those crispy onions that push it over the top for me. It comes with excellent hand-cut fries, served in a mini fry basket. Wife-and-husband team, Sharon and Richard Caldwell, set out to create a place for Michigan-based beer, wine, cider, mead and liquor to be served. A variety of mini tacos are served in soft flour tortillas, including ahi tuna and spicy salmon versions. I selected a filling of short ribs, cooked in a root beer stout demiglaze until fall-apart tender, then topped with braised red cabbage, with a squeeze of creamy cilantro ranch for good measure.

If that finger-licking goodness isn't enough, order the big bowl of beer mussels, served with crisp crostini to sop up every drop of the flavorful ale broth. I had a healthy dose of skepticism about dining at a popular sports bar, but Midland Brew House turned out to be a wonderful surprise. Yes, there are many TVs, and many cheering sports fans, but the atmosphere is upscale and comfortable – and our meal was quite good. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors. For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity.

Their research would go on to become a cornerstone of the company’s portfolio from the late 1990s onwards. Maurer had already designed lamps in paper before – such as the crinkly, wide-brimmed 1980 ‘Lampampe’ – but Mombach and Sczech treated the material in an entirely novel way. Using artisan-made paper imported from Japan, they discovered that, if it were repeatedly crumpled and flattened, the sheet would eventually take on the consistency of a textile while retaining its strength.

The Ernest Hemingway House and Museum in Key West

ernest hemingway's house in key west

Electricity was added to the house around 1899, and plumbing was installed about 1944, when Key West began receiving piped-in water from Florida City. Prior to that date, the islanders collected rainwater in cisterns, two of which are still on the property today. She used the perfect mix of humor and history to keep our group entertained and engaged while we learned about the house and Hemingway’s time in Key West. On exhibit are several typewriters that Hemingway used throughout his career, tangible tools of his trade that produced some of his most famous works.

The Dixon family: 1961-present

Before the pool, the garden was home to Hemingway’s own personal boxing ring, where he would train and spar with local boxers. Legend has it that whilst Hemingway was away working as a war correspondent during the Spanish Civil War, he fell in love with wife number three, fellow war journalist, Martha Gellhorn. Back in Key West, second wife Pauline Pfeiffer heard about the affair and replaced the author’s beloved boxing ring with the pool out of spite. Hemingway loved art, so it’s fitting that a series of framed paintings and pictures surrounds the fireplace, including one of Hemingway that was hung when the museum opened.

After a night of drinking, Hemingway and “Sloppy Joe” Russell hand carried the urinal to Hemingway’s home. They placed it next to Pauline’s pool, where it still serves as the water bowl for the family’s cats. About half of the cats at the museum have six or even seven toes on each front paw, but all the cats carry the polydactyl gene and can pass on the trait to their offspring. Bernice Dixon, a local jewelry store owner, bought the house at auction after Hemingway’s death for $80,000.

The Florida Keys: Hemingway House & Museum in Key West

Now a public museum, the two-storey Spanish Colonial house still retains its original limestone façade and reclaimed cheery yellow shutters. In 1939 Hemingway moved from Key West to Cuba, leaving his second wife and children behind. He received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954, following the publication of his novel The Old Man and the Sea.

For book lovers, stepping into Hemingway’s personal studio is sure to be a dream come true. Hemingway wrote some of his most famous works while living in the Florida Keys, including The Green Hills Of Africa, To Have And Have Not and most notably, For Whom The Bell Tolls. Hemingway’s original typewriter, leather writing chair and a collection of treasured novels have been preserved as he left them. For literature enthusiasts, history buffs, and anyone seeking a unique and immersive cultural experience, a visit to the Hemingway House in Key West is an absolute must.

Hemingway was inspired by the folklore legend to begin collecting the polydactyl cats. A photo in the dining room of the Hemingway House and Museum shows the writer’s sons Gregory and Patrick holding Snowball, the first of the family’s six-toed cats. When Hemingway’s second wife, Pauline Pfeiffer, found the home that the couple would move in to, it was boarded up and abandoned, but she could see it’s potential.

Excavating the limestone for the pool was a massive undertaking, and the project cost $20,000 when construction finished in 1938 (that’s about $365,916 in today’s dollars). When Hemingway returned, he famously shouted, “Pauline, you’ve spent all but my last penny, so you might as well have that! A notable spot on the grounds is the swimming pool, which Pauline built when Hemingway was away covering the Spanish Civil War as a correspondent. Although it was his idea to build a pool, he left the oversight of the project to Pauline while he was away.

00am-5:00pm for walk-in visits.

After two seasons in Key West, Pauline’s Uncle Gus purchased the house on Whitehead Street for them in 1931. According to legend, a fellow sailor and ship captain gifted Hemingway with a male cat with six toes named Snow Ball. Polydactyl cats were popular among sailors for their both their rat-hunting skills and as a supposed source of good luck.

Aside from the house itself, the museum also features a shop where visitors can find a range of items related to Hemingway and Key West. Whether it’s a book by the author, a unique piece of memorabilia, or a souvenir to remember the experience, there’s something for everyone in the shop. It’s the perfect place to pick up a piece of Hemingway’s legacy to take home. As visitors step into the writing studio, they can feel the weight of literary history and the power of imagination that emanates from the space. It is a pilgrimage to the heart of Hemingway’s creative process, where ideas were transformed into impactful narratives that continue to resonate with readers around the world.

Tift owned the home until his death in 1889, living in it alone for much of his life after the death of his wife and two sons from yellow fever in the 1850s, and his daughter’s passing in 1869. Hemingway’s home was originally built in 1851 by Asa Tift, a former naval architect and sea captain from Groton, Connecticut. Tift owned several stores in Key West, along with ships and a large salvaging operation, making him one of the wealthiest men in the area at the time.

But the house on Whitehead Street in Key West was of particular importance, both in Hemingway’s personal life and in his literary development. To quote Hemingway, “One cat just leads to another.”  Walking around the property you will see how accurate this is as descendants of that original cat freely roam the property. And just as the famous author once did, the cats are named after famous people. Regardless of the legend behind the pool, it was an architectural feat in 1937.

Pfeiffer, well acquainted with her husband’s often unstable moods, calmly had the penny embedded in concrete, forever immortalizing his outburst. Hemingway helped make Key West famous, and he and the city became almost impossibly intertwined during his years there. He immortalized his favorite haunts and drinking buddies through his writing, most famously in 1937’s To Have and Have Not, a Key West-set novel inspired by a group of local black-market smugglers. Hemingway also built a boxing ring on the property, allowing the self-styled pugilist a place to spar.

She lived in the home until 1964 when she moved into the guest house and opened the main building as a museum. The home’s location is on the second-highest point on Key West, about 16 feet (4.88 m) above sea level. Tift chose an elevated spot in order to excavate limestone from the property to construct the house. The excavation also allowed for a basement under the home, a rarity on Key West.

The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. The company traces its history to 1914, when its founder Antonio Puig created it in Barcelona from the ashes of his import business. The story goes that a German submarine sank a vessel carrying an uninsured shipload of his goods, putting an end to that trading venture. Antonio’s new company distributed perfumes, and before long began to produce its own line of products, including the first lipstick manufactured in Spain and a best-selling lavender fragrance. The bulk of its growth in the 20th century came from perfumes under license.

At least for now, Puig has an edge in its key segment, says Ann Gottlieb, a New York-based perfumer,  or a “nose,” as they’re called in the business, who has worked extensively with Puig. Puig’s acquisition drive began with a transformative deal with designer Paco Rabanne in 1968 to make and distribute his perfumes. The accord  eventually led to the purchase of Rabanne’s fashion business, too. Puig tapped a similar playbook, of using fashion to sell fragrance through deals with Carolina Herrera, Nina Ricci and Jean Paul Gaultier in the decades that followed. In 2018, it bought a majority stake in Dries Van Noten, one of the last independent names at the top of Europe’s fashion sector, and later launched a perfume and cosmetics line. As well as showcasing works by the likes of Chillida, Tàpies, Luis Feito and Antonio Saura, the museum operated independently from the cultural framework of the Franco regime and helped transform Cuenca into a hub of artistic production and education.

The “hogar” represents the collective responsibilities, routines, and dynamics that exist within a family or household. In Spanish, the concept of a house is often intertwined with the idea of family. The word “casa” can be used to refer to a family unit or household. It encompasses not only the physical space where the family lives but also the relationships, traditions, and dynamics that exist within that environment. “Residencia” is another translation for “house” in Spanish, but it is more commonly used to refer to a place of residence for specific groups of people.

A conversation with the painter Gustavo Torner, a native of Cuenca, led to a visit to the city and the discovery that its famous Casas Colgadas (Hanging Houses) had been renovated but were standing empty. Immediately struck by the houses as a possible site for a museum, Zóbel managed to persuade the mayor to let him use the properties in return for a symbolic rent. While Spain was home to an entire generation of globally renowned abstract artists – including Eduardo Chillida, Jorge Oteiza, Manolo Millares and Antoni Tàpies – it had done little to honour them. The small kitchen, however, had “that classic country-kitchen look from the 1990s,” says Andrew. Think builder-grade cabinets with a pickled finish, laminate countertops, and blue tile on the floor.

What do an 1885 Victorian in San Francisco, an 1870s Federal townhouse in Manhattan, and an 1840 Greek Revival house in Sag Harbor have in common? They’re all the former pet projects of John de Neufville, a real estate investor whose passion for renovating historic homes stems from a lifelong love of architecture. “My mother grew up in New Orleans and always had an affection for old houses,” he says.

An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. Known for his short sentences, multiple wives, and six-toed cats, the famed American novelist was a member of the “Lost Generation”, a term coined by fellow writer Gertrude Stein. Pilar was docked at Cojimar, a small fishing village east of Havana, which was the inspiration for Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea. The finished yacht cost $7500 and was brought to Key West and christened Pilar.

Built in the first half of the 20th century, Spanish Revival houses feature stucco walls inside and out, archways, large windows, elaborate ironwork, heavy wood beams, and decorative tilework. That sense of mirth is translated in the easygoing flow of the home. “The openness of the layout allows for a freedom of movement,” says de Neufville, noting that the design was conceived out of a need to build a house that the couple’s young son could grow into and feel at home in. Though de Neufville’s obsession with beautiful homes remains strong as ever, the culmination of it all just might be enough to let him stay put for a while.
